What Is a Valve Adjustment?

It's the maintenance item riders skip because the bike "seems fine" — until it isn't. Here's what valve clearance is, why it matters, and how to know when yours is due.

Between your camshaft and each valve there's a tiny, deliberate gap. Keeping that gap in spec is the difference between routine maintenance and engine damage.

The gap that keeps your engine alive

Every four-stroke engine breathes through valves — intake valves that let the air-fuel mixture in, exhaust valves that let burnt gases out. They open and close thousands of times a minute, driven by the camshaft. Between the camshaft and each valve there's a small, deliberate gap: the valve clearance, or valve lash.

That gap is not sloppiness — it's engineering. Metal expands as the engine heats up, and the clearance is what guarantees each valve can still close completely at operating temperature. A valve that closes fully seals the combustion chamber and — critically — sheds its heat into the cylinder head while it's seated. A valve that can't quite close never gets to cool down.

Why clearance drifts

Valves and their seats wear against each other with every single cycle, and the clearance slowly changes as they do. Which direction it drifts depends on the engine and where the wear happens — clearances can open up (loose) or close down (tight). Either way, the engine doesn't announce it politely; it just slowly moves away from spec while the bike keeps running.

Loose valves vs. tight valves

  • Loose valves usually tell you. The classic symptom is ticking that's louder than it used to be, or clearly getting worse. Annoying, and it costs a little performance — but loose valves are the merciful kind, because you hear them.
  • Tight valves are the dangerous ones. They're quiet. A tightening valve shows no obvious symptom until it can no longer seat fully — then compression starts dropping, the bike starts harder, and the valve, unable to shed heat, begins to burn. By the time tight valves make themselves known, some damage may already be done.

That asymmetry is the whole argument for checking on schedule instead of waiting for symptoms: the failure mode you can't hear is the expensive one.

How the job is done

A valve adjustment is measurement first, adjustment second. The engine has to be at the temperature the manufacturer specifies — most call for a cold engine, some warm, and we follow the spec for your specific engine. Clearances are measured with feeler gauges and reset to the factory figure. It's routine work with the engine assembled — not a teardown — but it rewards patience and precision, because "close enough" defeats the purpose of a gap measured in fractions of a millimeter.

A valve adjustment is not a valve job — a valve job is machine-shop work on a removed cylinder head to restore burned or worn valve seats. Staying on the adjustment schedule is exactly what keeps you from ever needing one.

How often is it due?

Your owner's manual is the authority — intervals vary widely by make, model, and engine design, and some modern engines go a long time between checks. As one shop-confirmed reference point: air-cooled Harleys need valve clearances set every 10K miles. If you don't know when yours was last checked — especially on a used bike — that's reason enough to have it measured.

What it costs

Valve access varies enormously between bikes — on some engines the clearances are reachable in minutes; on others, bodywork, tanks, or radiators have to come off first. That's why honest shops quote valve work per bike rather than off a flat menu. Tell us what you ride and we'll quote it straight.

My bike ticks — does it need a valve adjustment?

Some valve-train noise is normal, especially on air-cooled engines. What's not normal is a tick that's louder than it used to be or clearly getting worse. If you're not sure, bring it by — we'll listen and tell you honestly, and a compression check can confirm whether the valves are sealing.

What happens if I skip valve adjustments?

Loose valves cost you performance and get noisy. Tight valves quietly lose their ability to seal and cool, compression drops, and the valve can burn — turning a routine adjustment into head work. The expensive failure is the silent one.

How often should valves be checked?

Follow your owner's manual — intervals vary by make and model. Air-cooled Harleys: every 10K miles. Unknown history on a used bike is itself a reason to check.

Can I ride to the shop if my valves need adjustment?

Slightly overdue with no symptoms — usually yes. Pronounced ticking, hard starting, or power loss — get it seen soon, and don't make long trips on it.
