Harley-Davidson Fault Codes

How to check, clear, and understand common Harley-Davidson diagnostic trouble codes — no scan tool needed.

Harley-Davidson diagnostic trouble codes can often be read directly through the gauge cluster without a scan tool. This page covers common codes, what they usually mean, and what to do next. Because Harley uses different modules, security systems, ABS, and throttle systems across years and models, not every code applies to every motorcycle. A stored code is a starting point — not a final diagnosis.

P
Powertrain
Engine, fuel, ignition, throttle, sensors, charging
B
Body Control
Lighting, switches, security, BCM, accessories
C
Chassis / ABS
Wheel speed, ABS, braking, TPMS
U
Communication
CAN bus, module-to-module data

Many Harley-Davidson models let you pull codes directly from the speedometer. Here's the typical method:

1Set the Run/Stop switch to RUN. Leave the ignition OFF.
2Press and hold the odometer reset button.
3Turn the ignition ON.
4Release the button when "diag" appears.
5Press the button to cycle through modules — each letter flashes.
6When the module you want is flashing, press and hold for ~5 seconds.
7Stored codes display one at a time. Press to scroll. "none" = no codes.
Module indicators: P = ECM (powertrain) · S = TSM/TSSM (security) · SP = Speedometer · T = Tachometer · Newer bikes may show b (BCM) and ABS.
2014+ Touring models: Use the left handlebar toggle switch instead of the odometer button.
“No Rsp” means: The bike isn't equipped with that module, or the Run/Stop switch is in the wrong position.

When a Fault Code Means You Should Stop Riding

Be extra cautious if the bike has:

Electronic throttle or limp-mode codes (P1510, P1511, P1512, P2105)
Charging system voltage problems (P0562, P0563)
ABS or wheel speed sensor faults combined with warning lights
Cylinder no-combustion or coil faults causing misfire (P1353, P1356)
Overheating codes (P1017)
Jiffy stand or security no-start issues

If the bike is running poorly, shutting down, or showing safety symptoms — get it diagnosed before riding.

Need Help Diagnosing Your Harley?

A fault code points you in the right direction, but proper testing and experience confirm the actual cause. At Motorcycle Tire Center, we help riders solve real-world problems — not just read codes.

Not every fault code applies to every bike. Codes vary by year, model, engine, ABS generation, and instrument cluster. This page is a practical reference — a stored code is not always proof that a part has failed.
