Best For
Daily Commuter
You're putting regular miles on a Honda Shadow or Yamaha V-Star — work runs, errands, the occasional freeway stretch. You need a tire that lasts, tracks straight, and doesn't require managing its mood. The D404 was essentially built for this kind of riding.
Perfect Match
Weekend Cruiser
A few thousand miles a season, occasional two-up runs, relaxed highway cruising from Orange County out to the desert or up the coast — the D404's comfort-oriented bias-ply construction and stable straight-line character are well-suited to your pace and priorities.
Great Match
Canyon Carver
If you're pushing hard lean angles through the canyons and want real feedback at the limit, the D404's bias-ply construction and moderate dry grip score weren't engineered for that mission. You'll want to step up to a tire with more dynamic capability.

Frequently Asked
Dunlop's own specifications exclude Harley-Davidson applications from the D404's fitment chart. If you're running an H-D platform, the D401 or D402 are the correct Dunlop options — purpose-built for those bikes. Don't force a fitment that the manufacturer advises against.
Under typical metric cruiser use — street commuting, weekend rides, moderate loads — riders commonly see 10,000 to 14,000 miles from a rear D404. Fronts tend to outlast that comfortably, often pushing past 15,000 miles. Aggressive throttle habits and heavy loads will pull those numbers down.
It's bias-ply — a deliberate choice for this segment. Bias-ply construction handles load capacity well, produces a forgiving and comfortable ride, and suits the relaxed handling geometry of most metric cruisers. You trade some sharper cornering feedback for a smooth, planted feel.
It's adequate for typical wet-weather street riding in Southern California — light rain, damp pavement, the occasional surprise drizzle. That said, its wet grip score isn't in the same league as modern sport-touring radials. Adjust your pace accordingly when conditions turn slick.
The D404 was factory-spec on several popular Japanese cruisers — the Honda Shadow Aero, Yamaha V-Star 1100 and Royal Star, and Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad among them. That OE pedigree makes it a natural first choice when it's time to replace what came on the bike.
Technically possible, but not something we'd recommend without thought. Mixing bias-ply and radial constructions can introduce handling inconsistencies, especially mid-corner. Running a matched D404 front and rear keeps the handling balance predictable — the way Dunlop designed it to work.

Dunlop D404 Tires in Orange County — MTC

Motorcycle Tire Center in Orange, CA stocks the Dunlop D404 for metric cruiser riders throughout Orange County — Irvine, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Fullerton, and beyond. If your Honda Shadow, Yamaha V-Star, or Kawasaki Vulcan is due for a tire swap, the D404 is the proven OE-replacement option: bias-ply construction, solid mileage, and street-tuned tread that fits the way these bikes are actually ridden. We carry it below MSRP, and we can have it mounted and balanced the same day you walk in.

Our walk-in mount and balance service keeps it simple: $69 mount, $9.95 balance, and $3.50 disposal per tire. No appointment required — just show up at our Orange location and our technicians will handle the swap while you wait. We work on metric cruisers of all sizes, and we'll make sure the D404 fitment is correct for your specific year, make, and model before we ever break the bead.

The D404 earns its place in our catalog because it does exactly what most cruiser riders need — honest mileage, predictable street handling, and a comfortable ride without a premium price tag. It's not a canyon carver and it's not designed for Harley-Davidson fitments, but for the rider putting regular miles on a Japanese platform, it's hard to argue with. Questions about sizing or fitment? Call us at (714) 516-9059 and we'll sort it out.
