Competition 'gummy' compound engineered in Endurocross racing delivers serious grip where standard knobbies lose traction
Tread blocks designed to cut through loose surface material and lock onto the hardpack underneath for consistent hookup
Recessed 'plush pad' zones between knobs let the tire flex and absorb sharp edges, rocks, and roots — less hand-jarring fatigue on long technical sections
Dual-ply nylon carcass adds puncture resistance and sidewall toughness for aggressive riding over debris-heavy terrain
High wear-resistance compound fights chipping and tearing even under hard off-road abuse
Lateral shoulder grooves create extra biting edges and allow independent knob flex through ruts and off-camber lines

Best For
Endurocross & Hard Enduro Competitor
If your weekends involve log crossings, boulder gardens, and steep technical scrambles at the ragged edge, this is your tire. The AT81 EX was born in exactly that environment — grip is its entire identity, and longevity takes a back seat to performance.
Perfect Match
Serious Trail Rider
Riders chasing gnarly single-track with minimal road-riding in between will get a lot out of this tire. You'll trade some tread life for a level of off-road traction most knobbies can't match — a trade most hard-core trail riders are happy to make.
Great Match
Dual-Sport Touring Rider
If you're covering real highway miles between trail sections, the AT81 EX's soft compound will wear down faster than you'd like and doesn't love extended pavement stints. A harder-compound dual-sport tire will serve you better on that kind of mixed-use riding.

Frequently Asked
The AT81 EX runs a much softer, stickier compound developed specifically for Endurocross racing — a level of grip you simply won't find on a dual-sport tire built to balance road miles with dirt performance. The flip side is faster wear, especially on pavement. This tire is purpose-built for extreme terrain, not commuting between trail heads.
That depends almost entirely on what you're riding and where. On pure technical off-road terrain it holds up respectably, but the soft compound does wear faster than harder knobbies — and pavement accelerates that significantly. If mileage is your priority, this isn't your tire. If grip is, it delivers.
The AT81 EX carries an M-speed rating good to 81 mph, so occasional pavement transitions are manageable. What it doesn't do well is extended highway riding — the aggressive knob pattern and soft compound aren't tuned for road stability or longevity on asphalt. Keep street stints short.
Those recessed zones between the tread blocks allow the rubber to deform and absorb impacts from rocks, embedded roots, and sharp edges instead of transmitting all that harshness straight to your hands. On a long, technical ride that kind of compliance adds up — less fatigue, more focus.
Not really. The AT81 EX is engineered for Endurocross and hard enduro conditions — think varied, unpredictable terrain with serious obstacles — rather than the groomed, high-speed jumps of an MX track. The carcass and tread pattern are built for technical scrambling, not flat-out track laps.
Two-ply nylon construction gives the sidewalls significantly more resistance to punctures and pinch flats when you're grinding over sharp rocks and debris. Technical terrain is hard on tires, and the extra carcass integrity means you're less likely to end your ride early with a sidewall failure.
