MTC Shop Notes — Touring Models

Touring bikes are workhorses that rack up miles fast. A few things we see regularly on high-mileage baggers:

  • Brake fluid on touring bikes goes dark quickly — especially rear — due to heat from the exhaust proximity. We always flush both circuits at 10K regardless of appearance.
  • Milwaukee-Eight engines run cooler and cleaner than Twin Cams but the cooling system requires attention — check coolant level and condition at every major service.
  • Drive belt tension on loaded touring bikes deserves a close look at every service. Solo riders and two-up riders will see different wear patterns.
  • CVO models often have aftermarket exhaust and air cleaners — we account for this when servicing and can re-tune if needed.

Recommended Fluids

What We Put in Your Harley

We use Motul and Drag Specialties fluids — both trusted names in the Harley community with formulations designed for air-cooled and liquid-cooled V-Twin engines. No generic house brands.

Motul

Engine Oil — 7100 & 300V

Motul 7100 20W50 is our standard recommendation for Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight engines. For high-performance builds and track use, Motul 300V Racing offers superior protection at extreme temperatures. Both exceed H-D’s Screamin Eagle specifications.

Drag Specialties

Primary & Transmission Fluid

Drag Specialties primary chaincase and transmission fluid is formulated specifically for Harley wet clutch systems. It meets and exceeds H-D factory specs and is available for every model from Evolution-era through current Milwaukee-Eight.

Motul & OEM

Brake Fluid & Coolant

We use Motul DOT 4 brake fluid for all H-D braking systems. For liquid-cooled models (Milwaukee-Eight, Revolution Max, Pan America), we use the manufacturer-specified coolant to protect the aluminum cooling system.

Common Questions

Harley Maintenance FAQ

No. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, manufacturers cannot void your warranty simply because you used an independent shop for service — as long as the service is performed to factory specifications using equivalent parts and fluids. We follow H-D's maintenance schedules exactly and document everything. Keep your service records and you're protected.
We recommend Motul 7100 20W50 full synthetic for most Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight engines. For Sportsters we use Motul 7100 10W40. For the Revolution Max (Sportster S, Pan America) we follow H-D's specific oil requirements for the liquid-cooled platform. Motul meets and exceeds Harley-Davidson's Screamin Eagle oil specifications.
H-D's official interval is every 5,000 miles. In Southern California's heat — especially stop-and-go freeway riding — we recommend changing at 3,500 to 4,000 miles if you're pushing it hard. Air-cooled engines run hotter in traffic than the engineers who designed those intervals accounted for. It's cheap insurance.
Never too late. Bring it in and we'll do a full assessment — check where you are on all service items and get everything caught up. A well-maintained high-mileage Harley will outlast a neglected low-mileage one every time. We'll tell you what it needs and let you prioritize.
Absolutely. We service all Harley-Davidson engine generations — Milwaukee-Eight, Twin Cam, Evolution, and older vintage iron including Shovelheads and Panheads. Vintage bikes often need more attention and we have the knowledge and patience to work on them correctly.
